OMG!!!! Microsoft is releasing ANOTHER newly remodeled Xbox 360! This one is supposedly quieter and smaller than the previous versions of the console. This new 360 has a built in 250 GB HD and built-in Wi-Fi N. Let’s just hope this newer version of the 360 will finally solve the “red rings of death” fiasco. (I’m on my 4th Xbox 360 and I knock on wood that I won’t need a fifth.)
SERIOUSLY? Another Nintendo DS? How many Gameboys will there be in my lifetime? Nintendo revealed the new Nintendo 3DS. Basically, the 3DS is a Nintendo DS with a 3D camera, a new thumb pad (slide pad), and a gyro sensor.
With a Nintendo 3DS gamers will be able to play games in 3D without wearing those geeky glasses! Be forewarned, Nintendo of America president Reggis Fils-Aime advised against children under seven playing in 3D. As quoted from his interview with gaming blog Kotaku, “We will recommend that very young children not look at 3D images,” warned Fils-Aime, adding, “That’s because, [in] young children, the muscles for the eyes are not fully formed…”
Does this mean there will be a bunch of cross-eyed kids running around because their parents didn’t limit their children’s playing time? I’m sure eye surgeons everywhere are salivating at the prospect of so many new future clients. Hold on! Is this the same warning about watching too much TV or playing too many video games will make you go blind? I swore that myth was put to rest long time ago.
Nintendo look out! Sony and Microsoft have set their eyes on your casual gaming fan base! Both companies are planning to release their versions of gesture controlled gaming this holiday season.
The Sony “Move” controller looks like a black Wii-mote with a lighted ball on top. Many have described it more explicitly. Google it if you don’t get the joke…. or try and blow the dust off of your rated-R imagination. The Sony Move is fully capable of full 1:1 motion capture. This 1:1 movement will make games more challenging and involving. “Power matters” when you swing; especially, in games like Tiger Woods PGA tour! (wink wink). With the arrival of new 3D televisions, Sony showed off a bunch of games (Killzone 3, Mortal Kombat, MLB) utilizing stereoscopic 3D. Yes, you will need to wear the glasses while you play. My question is, how long will it take for the effects of motion sickness to set in?
It looks like Sony is finally following in the footsteps of Microsoft. Ps3 owners are going to have the choice to opt into a subscription package for exclusive online content. Sony Plus will cost $50 annually.
Microsoft revealed controller-free gaming to the world with their presentation of the “Kinect.” Where the Wii and Move require a controller in-hand, the Kinect only requires the gamer to stand or sit in front of Microsoft’s new motion sensor. The Kinect’s 3D cameras can recognize your face and detect both your movement and voice. With Microsoft’s Kinect, gamers will be able to control their Xbox 360 via voice commands and communicate with friends without a headset. The Kinect will have a bunch of exercise, sports, and dancing games released in November. I can only imagine the new YouTube videos that are going to surface once old people and kids get their hands on the Kinect.
It seemed that Nintendo could not contend with the fact that Sony’s Move and Microsoft’s Kinect have the advantage of utilizing next-gen/HD graphics. I think this is why Nintendo focused their presentation primarily on their handheld 3DS system rather then promoting the Wii console. The arrival of the Move and Kinect is really going to test the longevity of the Wii in regards to gesture controlled gaming. Nintendo is going to have to go back to the drawing boards if they expect compete. Nintendo, step up your game.
Wii 2.o at E3 2011? We can only hope.
